Thank you to the 10K strong YT community (which includes many of you)... muchas gracias, amigos.

Gratitude

First up, some of that #gratitude (aside: I did an Insta post that had at least two friends asking if "I was ok?" but also understanding that "I guess your public persona is a bit different*?" and also "You're a a clown, Tripathi")

[*Yes, sometimes my 'public persona' is a bit MORE and sometimes a bit of a distilled version of me. But I digress.]

AHEM. Not only am I very much okay (and looking forward to the Year of the Horse and entering my villain era possibly? Ok that's too much Insta for me!) but I am sharing Gratitude for each of you reading this. It was also a lesson that landed this year – "practising" gratitude (and presumably not just as a performance on social) can actually have a positive impact on your overall health!

You can see that clip here on Episode 55 of the Say Again Podcast which rounds out the year for me on the pod. The show notes have the time stamps so you can jump straight to the bit on Gratitude if you like. πŸ‘

Watch this and hit subscribe if you like!

In this solo episode, I shared 5 lessons learned in a year filled with deep conversations, incredible guests, and massive shifts in how we engage with the world, with Big Tech and each other. Namely I chat a bit on:
1. Using AI mindfully
2. Being intentional about what we consume and create online
3. How to practise gratitude in a way that is not performative
4. How to reclaim our attention spans (!) and go analogue (!!)
5. How to Read more and read better.

I think it's critical to start re-discovering the art of serendipitously discovering amazing books (and other content?) – not just relying on an algorithm that will give you more of what it knows you like and then more. AND THEN SOME MORE. But also let's hijack our attention spans back, no? What do you think?

Inspiring Conversations

Say Again Podcast Episode 54 featured Tech leader Shriram Parthasarathy (who describes himself in his X bio as blind by birth not vision). Shri spent close to 13 years at Microsoft including most recently as Global Marketing Operations leader for Asia, and we get a chance to talk about AI, AI-related anxiety, some great podcast and reading recommendations, as well as how he thinks it's the time to tune out the noise as much as you can and look to build, go deep and learn what you need to. Shri is hugely inspiring, and talks about DEI, Disability rights and awareness and also that fascinating term, the 'enshittification' of the user experience (and what platforms must do!) so do check this out*.

Episode 53 of the Say Again Podcast with Cristina Martinez Pinto

Episode 53 of the Say Again Podcast was with the phenomenally talented PIT Policy Lab Founder-CEO Cristina Martinez Pinto who joined me early morning from Mexico City and talked about some of the big issues when it comes the AI-ascendant era, and critically, where the non-US/China players are flexing or needing to deep dive. Btw Cristina is very much the real deal, she's a Responsible AI Fellow at Stimson Center, a very talented tech policy entrepreneur and she's been named on a GLOBAL list of 100 Top Women in AI Ethics. So of course we talked Ethics, geopolitics, the global South, as well as a very moving segment on burnout and Cristina's own diagnosis of Depression. Our health really can and does take a hit from the always-on hustle culture, which I think is something that affects so many of us. Do check out this important chat and share your own thoughts if you'd like to, 1:1 or right here.

The Health Collective Highlights

Since we last connected, we've had some lovely posts up on The Health Collective, in case you'd like to check:

  1. A Book Excerpt: Work Like a Monk: We published an excerpt from Chapter 1, with permission from Simon & Schuster India. This focuses on listening (sensing a pattern here?), the Buddha's One Sound Doctrine, Mindful Listening, Ambient Buddhism and even ... a Bruce Lee reference wrt a finger pointing at the moon.
  2. A Poem about Caregiving: This might be one of the few times (if ever?) that we have featured poetry but this is such a poignant piece by a caregiver that we had to feature it. Sujata Mathur sent us this poem and a small paragraph or two to add more context, where she says, "This, in a nutshell, is a caregiver’s life.
From shock and grief, a sense of being overwhelmed, to determination and resilience as you try and put your life back together again.
The first happens in a flash, the second part of finding your feet again can and usually does take years...". We're honoured to have her consider us a safe space to share as much as to rebuild and reach out. Do check out the poem and let us know if it resonates.
  3. A Book Review by Asma G on Lisa Damour's The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Making sense of the emotional lives of teenagers seems like a tall task, but it sounds like Lisa Damour has been able to do a lot of the heavy lifting with humour and deep insight in this NYT bestseller. Our reviewer Asma G has shared quotes and sections that really resonated with her as a guardian, with her characteristically deft touch. I'll share some (but not all!) of Asma's takeaways here - do read the piece for more.
Teenagers act awful when they feel awful.
Teens with empathetic parents have lower levels of systemic inflammation – a biological marker of emotional stress. Empathy is more effective than reassurance.
Some teens may come and talk to their parents close to bedtime because it allows them to set the terms of engagement – they can end the conversation when they want to, knowing that their parents are unlikely to follow them and ask further questions.
Every young person should have ways to feel good about themselves that they are able to control.

Something to Think About
